During this mission, Galland's aircraft was hit by an attacking P-47 Thunderbolt, Galland was injured but managed to outrun the chasing aircraft and crash landed on the Munich Airfield. That ended Galland's career as a pilot, which had begun during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.
