The sky is illuminated with tracer and bursting shells as Dinghy Young's Lancaster flies through the hail of defensive fire just a few feet above the dam. His specially designed bomb has just exploded sending a plume of water 1000 feet into the air.Code name Operation Chastise, which became known more simply as the Dambuster Raid, was one of the most audacious air raids of WWII. On the night of 16/17 May 1943, 19 Lancasters with 133 men attacked German hydroelectric dams in the heart of the Ruhr Valley.
Green on Go depicts the Lancaster crews of 617 Squadron on the evening of 16 May 1943 aboard their 19 Lancaster bombers, each with a single 10,000lb "UPKEEP" bouncing bomb slung exposed beneath the fuselage. At this point, the ground crews had no idea of the secret target that night.
