Sharon, Connecticut, 1967 July 20. On his personal "RLT" letterhead to Miss Manning. The author, who writes that he is retired, gives his opinion of "The New Yorker", articles in the "Saturday Evening Post" and America's reading habits and tells his correspondent that he is known as the "Town Monster". In full: I'm sorry to be tardy in answering your excellent letter, but I've been off traveling and have only just got home. I'm really very much obliged for your compliments about my writing for I tend to forget [word crossed out] these days that there are readers like you. The fact is, I recently said (coining a phrase)'The hell with it - I'm retired. Your letter was a serious one, and deserves some measured replies. It's a magazine now [word crossed out] dedicated to race-relations, of a rather special kind, and I'm not dedicated. I enjoy my Jewish friends , who are Americans and not Jews, and I'm damned if I'm going to be ardently for or against any particular bunch, as a writer. My interest in The New York er expired shortly after Ross died; I have no interest in the present management, over. He continues on the next page: al though, somewhat dishonestly on both sides, I sign a y e arly contract to write'as many profiles' as I can, accept a pourboire at Christmas, and then forget the whole business. The magazine s appears to come to me gratis in spite of the fact that I haven't read it for years. I can't read that bilge. For one thing, aside from the Line, it's too boring. And, of course, if they were doing a piece on the sex life of the male petunia, they'd manage to haul poor old Joe McCarthy in by the ears, somehow.I'm 54, and I haven't any markets left except bad ones. By good fortune, I'm rich enough not to have to worry about it.
B u t it's a little distressing, all the same. Have adults, except for literate sophisticates like yourself, quit reading entirely?
I'm aware that the foul stamp of TV has pretty well finalized America's drift toward moronism, but it's difficult to believe [word crossed out] what appears to be the public reading taste of today. I dislike to sound complaining, but I find that I'm now much happier just playing tennis, fishing, running my boat, traveling in Europe and elsewhere.
[word crossed out] This rather than trek over to Yale for a year's research and then write for another year to produce a book that can't possibl y compete with Irving Potsberg's treatise on Patagonian UnWed Mothers or James Baldwin's lamen t ations over the switchblade set. You're a dear girl to cheer me up, and I hope I haven't offended you here. I have an unfortunate habit of speaking frankly, the trait having earned me the title , in this social-register village of millionaire fake liberals, of [word crossed out] T own M onster. I'll think about starting something off in a year or two, maybe. And if I do, and finish it, I'll send you a copy, if we're to remain [word crossed out] friends. Your letter was refreshing; please write me whenever you feel like it. Numerous additions, corrections and cross outs (bolded) in Taylor's hand.Accompanied by envelope signed: Robert Lewis Taylor/Sharon, Conn. In handwritten return address ; typed address to Miss Corinne Manning, Washington, D. Neatly opened at upper edge. In the year of this letter, two of Taylor's books, a biography W.
Fields: His Follies and Fortunes and a novel (A Journey To Matecumbe) were published in paperback. The one-hour Western starred Kurt Russell in the title role and co-starred Dan O'Herlihy, Charles Bronson and Alan, Jay, Merrill and Wayne Osmond. Taylor, who added the "Lewis" to his name to distinguish himself from "New Yorker" cartoonist R. Taylor and actor Robert Taylor, was also known for his witty biographies - ranging from Charles Atlas, to the Brooklyn Dodgers to Gargantua, a circus ape - in the magazine. His biographical books gave insightful looks into such personalities as Winston Churchill and Carry Nation, and his novels also include Niagara, Two Roads to Guadalupe and The Silken Affair, which was made into a feature film in 1957.
