On September 7, 1941 around 4:00 P. The largest raid yet by the German Luftwaffe had just crossed the coast heading for London. The German formations covered a 20 mile front at altitudes ranging from 14,000 to 23,000 feet. The RAF scrambled all 21 Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons within 70 miles of London. The raid would continue for almost 12 hours causing significant destruction thoughout London's dockland.

This was the first raid of the Blitz and marked the Luftwaffe's switch from attacking RAF bases to blitzing England's cities. A strategy that would ultimately cost the Luftwaffe the Battle of Britain, halt Hitler's invasion plan and ultimately cost Germany the war.
