This is perhaps Robert Taylor's most enigmatic and enduring image of the Battle of Britain - the scene symbolizing the battle and its conclusion as well as an image can. All four Aces are household names when it comes to the Battle of Britain. All four have written well-known books on the battle - "Nine Lives" by Deere, "Fighter Pilot" by Doe, "Flying Start" by Dundas, "A Willingness To Die" by Kingcome.

During the absolute height of the Battle of Britain, a defeated Luftwaffe pilot stands beside his broken Me-109 and looks skyward as victorious Spitfires of 54 Squadron roar overhead toward their base at Hornchurch. Perhaps another mission before darkness falls? Perhaps only a respite at the pub this evening?
